WHAT IS A HYDROSOL?

Experience your skin’s blissful balance with seasonally harvested active ingredients freshly distilled into a Hydrosol that aims to cleanse, tone and heal by harnessing ionic properties to draw out impurities without affecting your skin’s natural oils. This week in our Self Love Journal, journey with us as we explore what a Hydrosol is and how it can support your skin through all of your seasons and cycles.

What is a Hydrosol?

A Hydrosol is the water-based active extract obtained through steam distillation of botanical materials. A Hydrosol expresses the plant’s healing qualities, allowing them to impart some of their cellular soul, hydrophilic compounds, to yours. Evidence of this ancient wisdom dates back thousands of years and has coined various names such as floral waters.
Hydrosols are alchemical in nature, involving separation and transformation. This is where the term hydrosol comes from: ‘Hydro’, meaning water, and ‘sol’, coming from the word solution. They consist of condensed water vapour along with the essential oils extracted from plant material like leaves, flowers, or fruits. During distillation, steam passes through the plant material, carrying volatile aromatic compounds and other water-soluble components. As the steam cools and condenses, it separates into two parts: the essential oil, which floats on top of the water, and the hydrosol, which is the water-based portion containing the plant’s active water-soluble constituents and a gentle, diluted version of the plant’s fragrance.

Hydrosols are produced as byproducts during the essential oil distillation process, and utilise parts of the plant that would otherwise be discarded, reducing waste and environmental impact, a potion that champions both self love and planet love.

What makes our Hydrosoul so special

Our Hydrosoul is a gentle yet powerful botanical cleansing and toning mist that captures the essence of nature’s healing touch. Formulated by herbalists, our Hydrosoul harnesses the power of organic Eucalyptus radiata cultivated on a bio-dynamic farm in regional Victoria, Australia. Through the delicate steam distillation process, the plant is transformed into a fragrant and active elixir, encapsulating the rejuvenating essence of Eucalyptus Radiata and it’s antifungal healing qualities. This active mist can serve as both a toner and gentle cleanser, offering natural toning benefits thanks to the gentle astringent properties of the Hydrosoul. It works to tighten and tone your skin, promoting a healthy, balanced complexion. The active botanicals in the water vapour carry minuscule, charged particles that aim to penetrate deep into your pores, drawing out impurities and cleansing the skin and leaving you feeling refreshed and balanced.

Benefits of our Hydrosoul

Our Hydrosoul is designed for all skin types, is gentle on sensitive skin and can add a refreshing boost of hydration, improving overall skin health and suppleness. Individual responses to ingredients may vary. Always perform a patch test before applying any new product to your skin. Hydrosols can replenish and maintain skin’s moisture balance, leaving it feeling soft and supple. Our Hydrosoul’s Eucalyptus Radiata contains active phyto-nutrients which are known for their antiseptic properties. This can help calm the skin and reduce irritation, perfect for sensitive skin or after sun exposure. Our Hydrosoul can help regulate sebum production for a clearer, more balanced complexion.

Fun Fact: The water used in the creation of our Hyrdosoul is Daylesford spring water;  top-tier natural spring water sourced from the mineral-rich aquifers within the Daylesford region, nestled in Dja Dja Wurrung country, located in Victoria’s Central Highlands. This area boasts the largest concentration of natural mineral springs across Australia. As the water filters naturally through layers of volcanic rock before reaching the aquifer, it acquires a distinctive mineral composition. This includes elevated levels of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, contributing to its premium quality.
