When we designed our formulations, we were fixated on capturing as pure a concentration of nature as possible. That means real fruits, natural preservatives, and the most innovative technology we could employ. We wanted to replicate how these fruits existed in nature, and distil the magic of the planet into a bottle. And we did just that. 

The farms we harvest from utilise tried-and-true farming practices that protect the planet, and respect the custodians of these lands that have been around for millenia. We strive to ensure that there are no harmful chemicals touching our crops, and nothing to stop Mother Nature from working as intended. 

We held, and continue to hold ourselves, as accountable as possible for making sure ‘organic’ means just that.

Every formulation at Bluem is based on the fundamental principle ofbiomimicry. Essentially, we look to emulate Mother Nature and all her beauty, to create solutions that solve our complex human problems. The multifaceted problem that we are working to solve is: how do you give your skin the absolute best care possible, still fight against climate change, AND give back to Mother Earth. The easiest way to make this possible is to simply make any virulent chemicals a no go. We know that nature has provided all the answers and it is up to us to find them. This also means that Bluem is safe to use for the whole family, including pregnant women and children. If it's not good enough for your baby, then its not good enough for Bluem!

Fair trade is a guarantee that we are doing our due diligence to ensure that everyone is getting their fair share and treatment at each step of every Bluem formulation. Unfortunately, many companies throw away these principles in search of a fatter bottom line, and feign ignorance; pretending that it is too difficult to make sure everyone is being treated humanely in their manufacturing.

At Bluem we keep this process simple, keeping our entire process from seed to skin Australian Made ensures full traceability across our entire product line allowing us to uphold the highest Fair Trade standards globally. We know our farmers personally and treat all of our partners like family (most of them actually related to us in some way) ensuring our entire network is not only value aligned but earns an above average wage.

Bluem is proudly based on Bundjulung Land, Byron Bay. ~ We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we work and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land. We recognise the past atrocities against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this land and that Australia was founded on the genocide and dispossession of First Nations people. We acknowledge that colonial structures and policies remain in place today and recognise the ongoing struggles of First Nations people in dismantling those structures. The struggle to seek justice, to remember and address this nation’s past is ongoing and is a necessary requirement for individual and collective healing process.

When you purchase Bluem products, you’re directly supporting your local community and economy. From seed to skin we have ensured traceability to source everything from our ingredients to our packaging locally. Australian made standards are preeminent globally, with arguably the world’s strictest labour, business, safety and quality-control standards globally. Supporting Australian made products also reduces your carbon footprint. Since all of our products are farmed, harvested, and manufactured right here on home soil, nothing needs to travel by plane or ship. For example, our finger limes are harvested and processed only a little drive from where we formulate and bottle our products, before making its way into your loving home… There are very few brands who can proudly claim that.

We understand how fortunate and privileged we are to be able to take advantage of the paradisaic lands of Australia, and we know how integral it is that we pay deep respects to the original custodians of these lands. That is why we believe it is important to work with and alongside First Nations farmers. The finger limes and Kakadu plums that are utilised in our formulations are both endemic to Australia; who better to trust and rely on to preserve and sustain our fruit and land, than those who have already been doing so for millenia?

Working with First Nation farmers, and supporting Indigenous workers creates continuous wealth and opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These opportunities are a great source of pride for First Nations people, and foster social and economic empowerment that has not been afforded to them before, especially in remote and regional communities. 

We still know that there is more to be done, and more we can do. At Bluem, we endeavour to always be searching for the best way to give back and empower these communities. It is the absolute least we can do, and we will forever be in the debt of the original custodians of these idyllic, expansive lands. 

We are entirely utilitarian in our approach to plastic. Pragmatism is the only acceptable attitude towards plastic, it can be an incredibly durable resource however, used out of context is can be dangerous for the planet. From seed-to-skin, we have thoughtfully considered the absolute best means to ensure zero waste across the entirety of our business. We are constantly seeking innovation in this space and we will not stop until Bluem is 100% biodegradable.

Biodegradeable: We set out to achieve a ZERO waste, guilt free bathing experience. Our Sustainable Soaps & Konjac sponges are comprised of 100% natural materials that organically breakdown. Leaving you with no waste and leaving the earth without a trace.

Recyclable: Every single Bluem product is packaged in entirely recyclable substances, with as much of it made of post-consumer recycled materials as possible. All Bluem bottles have been designed with recycling at its core. The gift of maternity is the highest honour nature can bestow upon any woman, and your bundles of joy deserve a level of care and formulation that is worthy of that. Every one of our Bluem products is absolutely safe for expecting mothers, and babies alike. We believe that just as Mother Nature would tenderly care for a blooming flower on her planet, you should be able to care for you and yours. No toxins, irritants, or worries. Just as nature intended.

We’re not just carbon neutral, we’re climate positive. That means we have been able to reduce, track and offset the carbon involved in creating your Bluem potions and then we decided to offset some more for safe measure. We have chosen to certify our carbon neutrality with Trace as it allows us to give back to in an environmental and humanitarian way both globally and locally.

The philosophy is simple, replace whatever you take from the Earth. Working with First Nations farmers has endowed us with a wealth of knowledge and techniques to ensure that our farming and harvesting is always healthy for the planet. Some of our plants are a part of crops that are thousands and thousands of years old; we never harvest more than necessary, protecting the health and longevity of the flora in the process. Through our innovative rain harvesting program, we are able to save over 1000 Litres of water a day from the roofs of our formulation labs in Byron Bay. Not only does this go a terrifically long way in conserving and protecting the natural resources of our planet, it also means that the water going into your Bluem products is of the absolute highest quality, as Mother Earth would have it.

Small batch production is means only creating the necessary amount of Bluem products we need, rather than continually manufacturing and stockpiling. It allows us to be more attentive to quality control, more in tune with how our farmers and farms are faring, and ensures that every formulation is as fresh and potent as possible by the time you use it!

Small batch production reduces the strain and demand on our local farms, ensuring the health and safety of our crops. Not only this, it allows us to work with the highest quality artisans across the country, who thoughtfully manufacture and synthesise every Bluem product. Call us old-fashioned, but we believe that this has a tangible effect on our formulations (for the better!) and we wouldn’t want it any other way. This is also why we tend to sell out quite alot, but that's okay as this patience is our virtue towards ensuring Bluem will be here for future generations.
